Udhayanidhi Stalin Stands Firm on ‘Sanatana’ Comment, Citing President and Mahabharata

When asked for a present-day instance of social discrimination, Udhayanidhi Stalin responded, “The omission of President Murmu from the new parliament’s inauguration is a clear example of ongoing Sanatana discrimination.”

Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has found himself in the midst of a significant political controversy due to his comment on Sanatana Dharma, sparking a heated debate. Today, he defended his stance with a concrete example, stating that the Central government’s exclusion of President Droupadi Murmu from the new parliament’s inauguration is indicative of Sanatana caste discrimination. This underscores the DMK’s long-standing position on the matter.

The DMK, founded on the rationalist principles of Periyar, has been opposing Sanatana Dharma for decades, which has proven to be a politically advantageous stance. For generations, a significant section of the population faced oppression at the hands of Sanatana Dharma practitioners. The caste system was systematically used to deny them equal rights, access to education, and entry into religious places.

Udhayanidhi Stalin reiterated his readiness to face legal consequences for his remarks. Subramanian Swamy has claimed that he wrote to the Tamil Nadu Governor, seeking authorization to take action against Udhayanidhi.

When asked for a current instance of social discrimination, Udhayanidhi Stalin pointed to the omission of President Murmu from the new parliament’s inauguration, labeling it as a prime example of ongoing Sanatana discrimination. The BJP has refuted these allegations.

Earlier in the day, Udhayanidhi Stalin had referred to discrimination using an example from the Mahabharata, a renowned Indian epic.

In the midst of this controversy, Udhayanidhi Stalin took a moment to celebrate Teachers’ Day, expressing his admiration for educators. He acknowledged the deep bond between the Dravidian movement and teachers who selflessly impart knowledge. He shared his sentiments on a social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, on Teachers’ Day.

This recent episode has ignited a passionate debate on the role of Sanatana Dharma in Indian society and politics. As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how it will impact Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and the broader discourse on caste discrimination.

“The reference to teachers asking for ‘thumbs’ alludes to the story of Dronacharya, the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas, who requested Ekalavya, a tribal youth, to give up his right thumb as a form of tribute once it became evident that Ekalavya had surpassed Arjuna in archery skills.

This past weekend, Udhyanidhi Stalin stirred controversy with his statement that ‘Sanatana (Dharma) is like malaria and dengue and so it must be eradicated and not opposed.’ His remarks have ignited a passionate debate surrounding the role and significance of Sanatana Dharma in contemporary Indian society.”

While Udhyanidhi Stalin’s comments triggered a significant backlash on social media, the BJP has characterized them as akin to ‘a call for genocide.’ Udhayanidhi, however, has vehemently denied these allegations, referring to them as fake news.

This comment has also exposed the Opposition Bloc INDIA to attacks from the BJP, especially in light of the upcoming state elections later this year and the general election scheduled for next year.
