A significant and tragic incident has unfolded in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, along the Gangotri National Highway. On Sunday, a private bus plunged into a steep gorge near Gangnani. Reports indicate that the bus was carrying a group of 35 pilgrims from Gujarat. Thankfully, 27 passengers have been successfully rescued from the scene. However, the heart-wrenching reality remains that 7 individuals have lost their lives due to this accident, and one passenger is still unaccounted for. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dhami has expressed his condolences over this unfortunate incident.

Further details reveal that the ill-fated vehicle involved in the incident was identified as bus number UK07PA-8585, carrying pilgrims hailing from Bhavnagar, Gujarat. The tragic occurrence unfolded near Gangnani on the Gangotri Highway. The unsettling incident transpired on Sunday evening, approximately around 4:15 pm. The mishap occurred as the bus was en route from Gangotri Dham towards Uttarkashi. The sudden descent of the bus into the gorge prompted cries of alarm and distress among the passengers. Promptly responding to the distressing news, local residents rushed to the scene, rendering aid by extracting the injured individuals from the ditch.

The wounded have been promptly transported to medical facilities through the 108 service and ambulance. To offer assistance and information, the district administration has provided helpline numbers: 7500337269, 1374-222722, and 222426.

Uttarkashi’s District Magistrate Abhishek Ruhela and Superintendent of Police Arpan Yaduvanshi have promptly responded to the situation, arriving at the scene after receiving the distressing information. Addressing the need for potential relief efforts, DM Ruhela informed that preparations have been made to deploy helicopters from Dehradun if required. Simultaneously, the Disaster Management Department made a request to the government for helicopters to facilitate the transfer of critically injured individuals to AIIMS Rishikesh. Unfortunately, Ukada authorities cited adverse weather conditions as an impediment and expressed their inability to provide helicopter services for the requested purpose.

A fortuitous turn of events occurred as averted disaster spared a bus from plummeting into the Bhagirathi river. Notably, just a few days prior, a truck laden with kanwariyas had met with an accident at the very spot where the bus incident unfolded.

In a serendipitous sequence of events, during the Sunday accident, the bus became entangled atop the wreckage of the previous truck wreckage, preventing it from plunging directly into the Bhagirathi river. The coincidental positioning of the bus over the truck’s remains played a crucial role in sparing the bus and its passengers from a potentially more dire fate.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is actively engaged in staying updated on the situation, as he maintains a continuous flow of information regarding the accident on Gangotri Highway. Holding discussions with officials, including district in-charge minister Premchand Aggarwal, CM Dhami has sought comprehensive details of the entire incident.

In light of the distressing events, he has issued directives to ensure the establishment of robust arrangements for the optimal treatment of the injured individuals. Additionally, arrangements for helicopter transportation to higher medical facilities have been put in motion, should the need arise. Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, CM Dhami has instructed officials to provide moment-to-moment updates on the unfolding incident
