A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck northern India, causing people to quickly exit their homes and offices. The tremors were significant and raised concerns about potential damage. Authorities and emergency services are assessing the situation to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas. This earthquake serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity and the importance of preparedness.

Earthquake in Delhi India: Strong earthquake tremors were felt in several areas, including Delhi NCR. People rushed out of their homes and offices due to the powerful tremors, which measured 6.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred at 2:53 pm, but no reports of significant damage have emerged so far. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be in Nepal.

These tremors were also experienced in nearby cities such as Delhi, Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad. Additionally, regions in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan felt the earthquake.

What is the Richter scale?
The Richter scale, developed by American geologist Charles F. Richter in 1935, is an instrument used to measure the velocity of seismic waves on the Earth’s surface. This device converts seismic waves into data. The Richter scale operates based on logarithms, where each whole number represents a tenfold increase in amplitude. A value of 10 on the Richter scale signifies the highest velocity.

Why do earthquakes occur?
The Earth consists of four layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The crust and upper mantle together are known as the lithosphere. This layer, about 50 kilometers thick, is divided into sections called tectonic plates. These plates are in constant motion, and when they shift significantly, earthquakes occur. These plates can move both horizontally and vertically. Sometimes, one plate moves beneath another, causing seismic activity.
