In the first ODI of the South Africa vs. Australia five-match series in Bloemfontein, Marnus Labuschagne took over as a concussion substitute for all-rounder Cameron Green. Green was forced to leave the field after being struck on the head by a bouncer from South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada.

Labuschagne, who had previously served as a concussion substitute for former Australia captain Steve Smith in 2019, entered the fray at number 7, replacing Green, who was examined by Australia’s physiologists and subsequently unable to continue. Labuschagne, initially not part of Australia’s ODI squad for the South Africa series, was called up after Steve Smith sustained a wrist injury.

South Africa’s innings saw an outstanding performance from their captain, Temba Bavuma, who remained unbeaten with a score of 114 off 142 deliveries. Bavuma’s century showcased his resilience and skill, making him only the second South African batter to carry his bat through an ODI innings against Australia. However, the rest of the South African lineup struggled against the Australian bowlers, managing a combined total of only 88 runs. This led to South Africa being bowled out for a total of 222 runs.
