Palmeiras Takes Control with Abel’s Unexpected Move and Delivers an Impressive Performance to Secure a Spot in Libertadores

In a surprising move, Abel Ferreira made changes to Palmeiras’ lineup for their match against Deportivo Pereira in Colombia. Artur, who usually plays, was replaced on the bench. Instead, Marcos Rocha and Mayke were put together on the right side. This decision was one of the factors that led to Palmeiras losing 4-0 on Wednesday in the first match of the quarterfinals of the Conmebol Libertadores tournament.

Even though it was a surprising decision, it’s not entirely new. Last year, when Palmeiras won the Brazilian championship, they occasionally used their player with jersey number 2 as a winger and the player with jersey number 12 as the more forward player on the right side. So, while unexpected, this kind of tactic has been seen before.

In the win on Wednesday, two out of the three goals were scored by them. When they were defending, Marcos Rocha played as a defender near Gustavo Gómez, while Mayke stayed in the middle area.

During the offensive plays, they worked together in a special way. They took turns, with the player wearing jersey number 12 breaking through the line of five defenders from the opposing team. This created an opening, and then Rocha moved into that space to attack and make a play.

Abel felt it was important to create this kind of movement to break through the opponent’s defense. This was especially needed because Artur, who wears jersey number 14, often tends to move more towards the center of the field instead of out wide.

Palmeiras’ plan worked really well and had a big impact, especially in the first half of the match. Deportivo Pereira allowed a lot of space for Palmeiras to pass the ball among their players. Additionally, Palmeiras showed their usual aggressive approach in trying to win back the ball right from the attacking position.

This is how Rony ended up giving away a penalty that led to the first goal, and he also helped in scoring the third goal. The team did really well in passing the ball, especially with Dudu and Raphael Veiga playing excellently. Number 10, who is a key player, did a great job in the front. The full-backs, who are the players who play wide on the field, also played a big role by creating openings in the Colombian defense. This is how Palmeiras scored their goals and won with what Abel called an “artistic note”.

It’s true that Deportivo Pereira is not as strong as Palmeiras, but Palmeiras made their advantage even bigger, especially in the exciting first half. The second and third goals were created by working together as a team and with really good skills.

With three goals scored within 35 minutes, Palmeiras had a 3-0 lead at halftime, and the situation was looking very positive for them. However, their approach changed in the second half. They didn’t push as hard even when they had the ball.

Deportivo Pereira started becoming more of a threat, trying to score to narrow the gap. They took advantage of Palmeiras’ reduced intensity, but their best chances were stopped by Weverton, Palmeiras’ goalkeeper, who made some great saves.

Even though Abel was already substituting some of the main players to rest them for the upcoming matches, Rony scored another goal in the 36th minute of the second half. Murilo gave him a fantastic pass that set up the goal. The player wearing jersey number 10, who has scored 21 goals in the history of the Libertadores tournament for Palmeiras, was the standout performer of the game.

In the first half, Palmeiras played really well and it was enjoyable to watch. The second half was more controlled. Because of this, Palmeiras gained a big advantage in the first match of the quarterfinals of the Libertadores tournament.

On the upcoming Wednesday, Palmeiras will play against Deportivo Pereira again to see who moves on to the semifinals. They can even lose by up to three goals and still make it to the next round.

This was a significant step forward, with a performance that makes Palmeiras fans excited and worries their competitors who are aiming for the Libertadores title.
