New BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid Unveiled with Electric Range of Over 100 Kilometers

The latest BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid has been revealed, and it can go more than 100 kilometers on electric power alone. This means you can drive it for quite a long distance without using any gasoline, which is good for the environment and can save money on fuel. It’s an exciting development in the world of hybrid cars.

After introducing the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series and its all-electric version, the i5, earlier this year, the German luxury carmaker has now launched plug-in hybrid versions of the sedan.

The new BMW 5 Series comes in two plug-in hybrid versions – the 530e and 550e xDrive. What’s particularly interesting is that these hybrid versions of the sedan can travel up to 103 kilometers using pure electric power. This significantly extends how far you can go without using gasoline.

The BMW 530e is the basic model of the plug-in hybrid and uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine combined with an electric motor. Together, this hybrid system produces a peak power of 295 horsepower and a maximum torque of 450 Newton-meters. It can travel up to 103 kilometers using only electric power.

Here’s a first-drive review of the BMW 5 Series:

Now, let’s talk about the 550e version. It uses a bigger 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine along with an electric motor. This combination in the hybrid system gives you an impressive 483 horsepower and a strong 700 Newton-meters of torque. The 550e has all-wheel drive, and when using only electric power, it can go up to 90 kilometers before needing to switch to gasoline. Both the 530e and 550e models use an eight-speed automatic gearbox for shifting.

BMW claims that these plug-in hybrid versions of the new 5 Series have some new technology that makes the electric motor more powerful. The 530e’s electric motor, for example, now produces 450 Newton-meters of torque, which is a significant improvement from the previous 280 Newton-meters.

Both of these plug-in hybrid versions of the new BMW 5 Series sedan have a 19.4 kWh battery. This battery can be charged at a rate of up to 7.4 kW. BMW mentions that with a 7.4 kW charger, you can fully charge the battery in about three hours and 15 minutes. If you’re using a regular household socket, it takes much longer, nearly 12 hours, to completely charge the battery.

In terms of looks, the plug-in hybrid versions appear just like the regular gasoline-powered model. However, there is a noticeable difference in the form of 19-inch alloy wheels and a flap on the fender for charging the battery.
