Lionel Messi Substituted Due to Apparent Injury During Inter Miami vs. Toronto FC Match

Lionel Messi had to leave the soccer game between Inter Miami and Toronto FC because he seemed to have hurt his right leg. This happened in the 37th minute of the match. Messi appeared to be favoring his leg, and he left the game shortly after. It was his first game since September 7 when he played for Argentina in a World Cup qualifying match. Messi has played 12 games with Inter Miami since he joined the team in July, and they haven’t lost any game with him on the team. In this game, Messi was quite active and took several shots, but none of them went into the goal. Inter Miami was winning 1-0 when Messi left the game.

Safid Deen of USA Today reported that Messi was seen stretching his right leg during the 34th minute of the game and appeared to be favoring his calf area. This occurred shortly after a play in which Messi charged towards the box but was defended too wide. Just two minutes later, Messi was taken off the field.

Lionel Messi returned to play his first match since September 7, when he led Argentina to a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match. Since joining Inter Miami on July 21, Messi has played in 12 matches, and the team hasn’t lost a game with the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner on the field. In Wednesday’s match, Messi was active, attempting three shots (one on goal) within a six-minute period in the first half.

While none of his shots found the net, Inter Miami did score just before halftime with Facundo Farías, taking a 1-0 lead. Messi handed the captain’s armband to DeAndre Yedlin before being substituted, and Robert Taylor replaced him in the lineup. Additionally, Jordi Alba left the game with an undisclosed injury three minutes before Messi’s exit, with an update expected from Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino at halftime.
