Congress Issues Privilege Notice Against Amit Shah in Lok Sabha

The Congress on Thursday issued a notice in the Lok Sabha alleging a breach of privilege by Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of making a false statement about Maharashtra farm widow Kalawati Bandurkar, whom Rahul Gandhi had met in 2008. The notice was handed over to Congress Speaker Om Birla MP and party whip in the Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore. The notice was given to Speaker Om Birla by Congress MP and party’s whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore.

Sharing the announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Tagore said, “Yesterday I submitted a privilege plea to the Speaker against Show Amit Shah who misled the House with his short story Karavati.

Gandhi had visited Bhandurkar’s house in 2008 after her husband committed suicide following the farm crisis in Vidarbha, Maharashtra.

During the no-confidence debate on Wednesday, Shah referred to 13 “failed” attempts to launch Rahul Gandhi’s political career and told the story of poor woman Karavati, he recall Rahul Gandi’s words. Shah said that the Modi government guaranteed her housing and ensured the benefits of various government schemes.

However, the Parliament alleged that the Modi government had lied about Ms. Kravati sharing a video of a farmer on X. In the video, Kravati claims that Rahul Gandhi helped him overcome poverty.

In his announcement, Tagore claimed that Shah had violated parliamentary privileges by not respecting accurate and factual information while addressing the House of Commons.

“The issue in question pertains to a statement made by the Hon’ble Minister of Home Affairs in Lok Sabha yesterday i e. 09.08.2023, wherein he provided details of facilities purportedly extended by the Government at the house of smt Kalawati, a farmer’s widow from Maharashtra. However, to the utter dismay of the concerned us this statement has been vehemently refuted by the concerned Smt Kalawati herself to media channels who have explicitly stated that the Modi Government has not provided any such facilities for the past eight years instead Sh Rahul Gandhi helped her in building her house,” he alleged.

“This discrepancy between the statement made by the Hon’ble Union Minister and the reality as communicated by the affected Smt Kalawati raises serious doubts about the veracity of the information presented in the Lok Sabha and it highlights a potential breach of privilege under Rule 22, Chapter 20 of the Lok Sabha Rules,” he alleged.

In view of the above circumstances, Mr. Tagore hoped that the Speaker would take cognizance of the matter and consider initiating appropriate action.
